Canada Day Fun

Canada Day is quickly approaching.  A day where many wear Red and White, attend family BBQ’s, and set up their lawn chairs to take in the spectacular firework display in their area.  Do any of these events resonate with you?  How will you be celebrating?

When I’m in Canada, I feel this is what the world should be like… Jane Fonda

For the past few years, we have spent Canada Day at the cottage where we decorate the dock with a fresh new Canada flag and often the deck with red and white streamers or balloons.  Many times, we have friends or family joining us and sometimes, it is just the two of us.  Whichever way we celebrate, we try to celebrate in the fullest.

With this upcoming celebration, I’ve found myself reflecting on what Canada truly means to me.  Recently, our political scene has been unsettled and tensions between Canada and the U.S. have deepened.  Amidst it all, I hear the many chants declaring: Canada Strong. Elbows Up.  Buy Canadian.

Now, don’t get me wrong — I deeply love and support my country. I take pride in buying Canadian products, celebrating our local communities, and appreciating the beauty of our land — from our vibrant seasons to the warmth of our people (well, most of us… but that’s a story for another blog). I especially love how, when we’re abroad and someone finds out we’re Canadian, we’re instantly met with friendliness and respect.

But lately, the division I’m seeing doesn’t reflect the Canada I know and love. In my opinion, this isn’t who we are. Canada was built on Christian values, strong families, simple morals, and above all — love. And if we truly stand by those principles, then we must be a nation that welcomes and embraces all people and all countries — not one that turns its back, even when tensions arise, as we’ve recently seen with our relationship with the U.S.

In order to be CANADA STRONG, I believe we need to stop with the border bullying (and I don’t mean Trump).  We need to come together as Canadians, proud and strong, and celebrate with our friends and family.  Welcome those Americans who may be visiting and embrace them warmly.  We need to speak kindly of our neighbours south of the border and remember that they need our support just as much as we need theirs.

So, as we head into celebrating Canada in a few days, why not celebrate fully and in style all while embracing our American friends to the south. – As already mentioned… Canada was built on values and I believe we need a strong reminder in that department.

Now go!  You have a few days to plan and prepare for that big celebration day.  Dig out your finest red and whites, wave our spectacular Canada flag proud and soak in all the family fun and laughter you’ll be having.

I’m unsure what our actual plans will be on that day – but I do know that I’ll be surrounded by my family, reminiscing about old Canada day memories, laughing about quirky past fun, and being in awe with the amazing fireworks display our community will have.

Sidenote:  Speaking of family time – it’s that time in the season for me to pause my thoughts, travel tips, and heartfelt stories – and instead pack my bags and embrace some well-deserved summer adventures.  You might notice a little silence in your inbox and on social media over the next few weeks, but rest assured, I’ll be recharging and gathering fresh inspiration.  I’m already looking forward to returning in the fall with some new reflections, inspiring thoughts, and summer adventure recaps.

Wishing you all a joyful and adventure-filled summer!
