Rocks, Pebbles, Rebels…

Are you a rock or a pebble?  I know. That’s a funny question to ask, but I was thinking the other day about how some people are rocks and others aren’t.

When I think of someone who is a rock, I think of stability, strength, consistency, and calm.  When I think of someone who is a pebble, I think of shifting, moving around, instability, or being swayed.

A Rock – stays firm.  Has a solid foundation.  Can withstand storms.

A Pebble – moves with waves, opinions, fears and trends.  They are easily displaced.

That made me stop and pause to think about myself.  Am I a rock? Or am I a pebble?  Or, can I be a bit of both?

When I really stop and think about it, I am certainly not a solid rock – at least not consistently. One that can’t move or budge. I am certainly not a bolder. However, I am not a pebble either. – at least again… not consistently.  At times, I can be swayed in my decisions, get bent out of shape or panic if a difficulty occurs, or even get carried away with the waves or crowds to suit my attitude.

So, how can I be both?

Am I a stable and grounded person? Or am I constantly moved by every current around me?

I read somewhere (although I cannot remember where – good ol’ brainfog LOL)… That a rock and a pebble may come from the same place — but one stands firm while the other is carried wherever the current decides.  Life has a way of revealing whether we are anchored like a rock or rolling like a pebble and this can occur throughout our daily lives.

Maybe in each of us is a solid rock and tiny pebbles.  Maybe our strengths and foundations become anchored in times of need and when we turn into pebbles shifting or rolling about, those closest to us magically turn into a rock?

Maybe that is why we need balance in life.  People around us to be that rock and anchor us when we are pebbles being swayed in the current.  People who are there for us. People who can be a leaning post, but also people who can rely on ourselves when they are pebbles.

This is my screen saver.  I am unsure where it is?  It is one that came with my laptop.  One of those preset photos…. but stare at it for a bit.  What do you see?

What I see are many rocks anchored in place.  They are solid and indestructible.  I also see Mountains far off in the distance that are also immoveable and strong.  But.. when you look closely, you see the ripples in the water moving past those rocks.  On the ocean bed are pebbles being easily sways back and forth with the current of the waves.  I see trees easily swaying in the wind, but with their sturdy trunk, they may bend, but they are unbreakable.  I see life – moving back and forth among the sturdiness of anchors and rocks in life.

This is true for our everyday lives as well.  All around us are rocks, anchors, trees, mountains to climb, pebbles, soft currents, or waves, but if we go through life with others – friends, family, loved ones, and even co-workers, we each can play an important part in how we cope day to day.

So, as you are contemplating whether you are a rock or a pebble, think of this.

You are a rock with the strength and courage you display daily and as you help and uplift others day to day. You are a pebble with the way you can shift and move with whatever comes your way adapting to the world around you.

What I call this… is a Rebel

You are one strong indestructible person with an anchoring soul that can be a steady for others as well as a smooth go with the flow pebble moving through life as it comes at you.

Now go, be a Rebel today!
