Things That Make You Go Hmmm #5

I haven’t written a ‘Things that make you go hmmm‘ blog in a while. I work very hard at trying not to complain or have negative thoughts come out of my mouth. I guess this thing that make you go hmmm isn’t so much of a complaint, but more of an insight or an observation. Something that just puzzles my mind in today’s world. Maybe I should have called this Things that Puzzle Me.
You cannot climb the ladder of success dressed in the costume of failure… Zig Ziglar
Whatever happened to dressing for success. Today, we walk around and see professionals and business people in matching track suits, hoodies or ripped jeans. We are often being helped by someone who looks like they are off to a weekend event instead of a day of success.
I entered the bank the other day – and I know Fridays are usually dressed down days, but to me – Metallica shirts under flannel button ups or funny graphic t shirts with well-worned jeans don’t seem to fit the professional image banks used to (and should still) portray.
This new ‘trend’ seems to be a common theme out in the professional world. The younger generation entering the workforce tend to have the attitude of that ‘I don’t care’ stance. ‘I can wear what I want’ stigma. ‘I cannot be told what to do’ attitude.
Maybe I am just assuming… I really shouldn’t do that….
Now, don’t get me wrong. I do see a fraction of the younger generation dressed for success or in appropriate work attire. Those who aren’t afraid to work hard. Those who know how to get ahead. Those who take pride in themselves and care.
It reflects a previous blog post discussing the growing trend of people dressing more casually for funerals – ultimately, it all comes down to a matter of respect.
If you want others to respect you and take your talents and career seriously, then present yourself accordingly. Maybe it’s a sign of my age (LOL), or maybe it’s my mom’s voice in my head, but appearance still plays a role. Dressing for success does matter.
When I walk into a bank – where my money is held, my mortgage managed, and my investments overseen – I want to be helped by someone who looks professional and put together. Their appearance reflects the institution they represent.

I know… I know… those generation X bankers behind the counter do know their ‘stuff’ – their technology skills and insights are extraordinary, but I do feel that more patrons would have more trust in banks if their team representing them actually looked the part.
Just my little rant for the week. It’s been quite some time since I had a Things that make you go hmm blog. That is actually quite pleasant to think about that. It must mean not much is bothering me and for this ‘little’ annoyance to be bothersome – well, it is something I can let go.
So, as you go about your day, whether that is to the bank or your own employment – make a statement and dress the part. You are not only representing yourself, but also your family, your place of employment, and your community. Doing so will not only change the way you see yourself, but it will gain the representation your employer strives for.
