Back To The 90’s Fitness
How much fun do you have working out? I guess I should first ask… do you work out? Or even exercise? Fitness should be fun! Your exercise routine should excite you, not bore you. One way I have discovered to add some fun into my workouts is to bring back the 90’s fitness.
Being healthy is not only about keeping your body moving and eating healthy. Being healthy also incorporates having creativity in your life, having fun, and enjoying your day. For me, I find if I change up my exercise routines – I get excited about heading to the gym. It creates a fun environment to enjoy not only my workout, but get the fitness in that my body requires.
How Do You Add Fun Into Your Fitness?
- Try a new machine
- Use the incline function on the treadmill
- Workout with a friend
- Make a new music playlist
- Get some funky new shoes or workout gear
- Try a circuit exercise
These are just a few ideas that you could try. One that I often incorporate is something I used to do back in the 1990’s. The Reebok Step. When I first saw this in my gym, I lit up. I used to love following exercise step video’s or taking a step class. I found I achieved a great overall workout just by using this simple apparatus. To make it a bit more difficult, I turn it into a circuit exercise to include not only targeting my core, but also to give me great cardio heart heath.
Here is what I do:
- Warm-up: Treadmill walk/run or stationary bike for 10-15 minutes
- Pick 3-5 different exercise options for the step
- Include a Kettlebell
- Include planks
The Circuit:
- 20 side steps
- 20 back steps
- 10 jumping bursts onto step
- 20 single leg knee drives
- 10 burpees
- 33 Kettlebell swings
- 30 second plank
Repeat 3 times (with adding 1 additional kettlebell swing to make it 100 swings in total). There are plenty of variations that can be incorporated as well. Adding a medicine ball or hand weights while on the step, doing dead lifts or squats instead of the kettlebell swings, as well as changing up the plank to do a side plank instead. Use your creative mind and change it up frequently for some fun.
Once the circuit is complete, you would have completed an overall cardio and core exercise. A fantastic fun fitness circuit to add to your day.

Note: Most Steps include the option to change your height levels. Pick one that is comfortable for you, but will also give you a challenge. The same idea goes for the weight of the kettlebell. Remember to use proper form while doing these exercises. If you are unsure, check with your fitness establishment if there is a personal trainer who can assist you in the proper form. I find this routine a refreshing addition to my weekly workouts. It brings me back into my young adult era – back to the 90’s fitness. Listening to a 80’s or 90’s playlist adds even more fun to the circuit.
