My Birthday Boy
How do you celebrate birthdays? Do you do anything special for your family? Your loved ones? Your friends? I certainly do. I love to go all out and make my loved one’s birthday special. It brings me so much joy in doing so. Today, we are celebrating our son’s 18th birthday. Our special birthday boy.
And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years… Abraham Lincoln
Birthdays in our house can range from a surprise at home dinner with friends to a fancy restaurant outing. A paintball competition to an escape room adventure. Or a Bahamas vacation to a cottage BBQ get-together. Regardless of the theme, any family member can expect decorations, a cake and most certainly… feeling spoiled.
Why the Cake? The Candles? Or The Party?
Have you ever wondered why we celebrate our birthday’s with a cake and candles or even a party? Well, it dates back to Egyptian days with reference to coronations and their gods. Then, the Greeks expanded that by placing candles on moon-shaped honey cakes. Lighted candles on the cake signaled a prayer was being sent high into the skies. Germany however, had a different theme of placing a lighted candle in the centre of the cake baked in the shape of Jesus signifying light of life. Once the candle was blown, the Greeks thought the smoke was taking the prayer and any wishes up high to God in the sky.
Birthday parties are said to have begun in Europe as a way to scare off evil spirits. They thought evil spirits came in stronger on your birthday, therefore, having family or friends gathering with laughter and noise would scare off any evil spirits near by.
I find it amazing how after all those years birthday cakes, candles and parties are still such an important tradition not only to my family, but to many others world wide.
It’s fun to look back on the past birthdays we have had for our son. Themes have included Spiderman, Ray’s Reptiles, Bowling, Funhaven, Marked Paintball, Movie days, Sleepovers and Cottage fun. Each one marking such a special memory not only for us, but also for himself. Now, as he turns 18… officially a man…we hope this day is no different.
