Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

I’m sure by the title, you already have that familiar nursery rhyme ringing in your head — softly humming the tune the way your mother once did when you were little. But have you ever stopped to wonder about its meaning? What does “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” truly represent?
This song holds a special place in my heart. I sang it countless times to my children when they were small — at bedtime, in the car, during quiet moments together. I even recorded myself singing it once on an iPod so my son could hear it while we were away and my parents were babysitting. It’s a simple song, yet filled with so much meaning.
Have you ever thought about what it stirs in you when you sing it?
The other night, I woke up with the song echoing in my mind. I’m not sure why — but I felt the need to write about it.
With it being Christmas Eve, I began to wonder: could this little lullaby have been inspired, in some small way, by the Christmas story? The image of the three wise men, spotting that brilliant star in the sky — a beacon guiding them safely to the manger where Jesus lay.
When I think of that now, I imagine that same twinkle — a light of direction, hope, and divine purpose. The way sailors once used the North Star for navigation. The way we look to the night sky when we’re searching for guidance. The way Christmas has a way of inviting us to look up.
Stars have long symbolized hope, curiosity, and divine guidance — all woven beautifully into the story of Christmas. With the help of my trusty sidekick, ChatGPT (whom I fondly call “Chad”), I learned that stars are often seen as a sign of God’s divine presence — light that shines even when the world feels dark.

In the Christmas story, the wise men didn’t fully understand the divine power behind that star, but they were drawn to it. They didn’t have all the answers. They didn’t know exactly where they were going. They just knew it meant something sacred — something hopeful.
The star in Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star can remind us of that same truth: God’s guiding light, calling us to trust, to believe, and to hope.
So if you find yourself feeling uncertain this season — unsure of your direction, weighed down by worry, or simply needing a spark of hope — look up. Find the twinkle. Let it remind you of the One who hung each star in the heavens. The One who provides hope and love. Look around you this Christmas Eve – I bet you’ll find many ways to feel the love… your family, the warmth of your home, the laughter of children, the kindness of a neighbour, the delicous cookies made with love especially for you.
Merry Christmas to my special online family and Merry Christmas to my loved ones here at home.
