A Caribbean Countdown to New Years

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate enough to spend New Year’s Eve in different places. Whether traveling as a family or just the two of us, ringing in the new year Caribbean-style has become one of our favourite experiences.

Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book.  Write a good one… Brad Paisley

I was trying to remember the first time we decided to head south for New Year’s, and it’s hard to believe it was already ten years ago. We surprised the kids with a trip to the Bahamas—a simple four-night escape filled with Bahamian sunshine, fireworks, and New Year’s Eve fun.

Since then, we have travelled almost annually for new years – whether that has been as a family or as a couple – traveling to Mexico on both the Mayan Riviera and the West Coast, as well as to Punta Cana.

Do we have a favourite? Hmm… that’s a tough one. But one memory that always stands out is from our stay in Mexico at Iberostar Quetzal. The resort had a tradition of releasing balloons with each guest making a wish for the year then, letting it drift into the sky. I remember standing there, surrounded by people from all over the world, everyone gathered around the pool, each of us releasing our hopes, dreams and wishes at the same moment. It was unexpectedly emotional. Such a simple gesture, yet together it became a beautiful expression of unity. It’s a moment we’ll always hold close as a family.

Since then, we have travelled to a few other fabulous resorts to experience their NYE traditions:

  • Iberostar Quetzel in the Mayan Riviera Mexico – twice
  • Hardrock Hotel Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta Mexico
  • Hardrock Riviera Maya in Mexico
  • Iberostar Punta Cana
  • Secrets Royal Beach
  • Secrets Tides

While each venue had a similar feel, they all offered their own unique touches. Some celebrations took place on the resort’s main entertainment stage, others were held in beautifully decorated conference halls, and a few were hosted entirely outdoors—perfectly positioned for an unobstructed view of the midnight fireworks. No matter the setting, the resort and its staff poured endless effort into ensuring a magical New Year’s Eve, filled with delicious food and entertainment that truly shined.

All in all, we’ve loved each resort’s unique take on New Year’s Eve. This year, we’ll be celebrating at Excellence Punta Cana, and I can’t wait to share those details with you soon.

So, happy New Year’s Eve… or should I say, feliz año nuevo — from my grateful heart to yours.
