Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is right around the corner.  A day to honour those special women in our lives. Our own mom’s, our mother in laws, our sisters, our aunts, and anyone in between who holds a piece of your heart.  When I think of Mother’s Day, I think of spring flowers, family fun, and surrounded by my own children – even as adults – full of love.

Mother’s hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever… Anonymous.

I recently read an endearing devotional called I Love You Mom.  It was a collection of stories by the authors sharing advice from their mothers, or life lessons, and the quiet strength they carried. Some stories were light and playful, like buying a first bra. Others carried deeper truths—like choosing kindness, even toward those who mistreat you. Each morning, I found myself moved to tears, reflecting on my own mother and the lessons she left behind.

For example:

My mom was an excellent encourager.  Throughout my childhood I remember many moments for school or for sports that she would cheer me on.

  • “You’ll pass with flying colours. You’ve studied hard”
  • “You are so fast and such a good sprinter”
  • “Wow!  You landed an axel.  I was never able to accomplish that, but you did.  Well done!”
  • “You are so beautiful in that wedding dress”

I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.  Whether it was myself or even my own children – she was right there cheering and laughing along.  A vivid memory is laughing and enjoying my 2 young children go sledding down a hill while visiting them for the weekend.  She laughed a lot at their fun.  The next thing I knew, she was on one of their sleds and zooming down the hill with them.  Amazing!  A child like spirit full of life and fun.

Do you have any motherly life lessons?

I often wonder if my own children will look back and see some of my motherly advice or life lessons as they move on in their adult lives?  I certainly hope so.  I believe I have, but that will be their life stories to tell one day. (But.. if I can ponder – I’d hope they saw me as a positive light, always trying to be helpful towards others, with a fun child-like spirit, and loving them with my whole heart).

So, Happy Mother’s Day mom up there in heaven.  Although I miss your stories, your laugh and your fun ways along with your simple advice when I had a cooking question – I know you are celebrating in the greatest garden full of tulips and daffodils smiling bright like a ray of sunshine.
