Supermarket Flowers

Supermarket Flowers, mother's day

Mother’s Day just passed and on that day I always reflect not only on my own wonderful children, but also my mom. You see, my mom passed in 2020 and I reflect a lot on certain yearly holidays.  As you may have read from previous blogs, certain songs inspire blog ideas and one song (which I can finally get through without crying) is Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran.  It is about his own mom who has passed away and it resonates deeply with me.

A mother’s love is more beautiful than any fresh flower – Debasish Mridha

Mother’s Day is a day to honour mothers, but for me… I like to also honour my children.  My two children mean the world to me.  I believe my soul purpose was (is) to be their mom – guide them, raise them, love them, and provide for them.  I adore them.  I love them.  Some top reasons why I love my two children are:

  • They are funny
  • They both have hearts of gold
  • They love life and adventure
  • They are insightful
  • They love their family (they actually love to be with their mom and dad lol)
  • They love games
  • They laugh a lot
  • They love music
  • They love to be active and fit
  • They are beautiful and handsome inside and out

Honouring my mom on Mother’s Day is also special to me.  When I hear the song Supermarket Flowers, I can hear the love Ed Sheeran has for his mom. I can hear the sadness he has by losing her.  I can hear the legacy she left for him.  Those points are ALL points that come to mind for my own mom when I listen to that song.

I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill
I threw the day old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink
Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face
I hope that I see the world as you did 'cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person I have become
Spread your wings and I know
That when God took you back he said Hallelujah
You're home

One verse that stands out is:

I hope that I see the world as you did ‘cause I know a life with love is a life that’s been lived.

Although I miss my mom dearly. I am so grateful for the relationship we had.  I know many people who have not loved or have not had a great relationship with their parents.  I had a great relationship with my mom.  I also have an amazing relationship with both my children – both my husband and I do.  I do see the world as my mom did because I know a life with love.  I have not ever had to worry or question if I am loved.

Do you reflect on anything? Anyone?  Is there a song out there that when you hear it, it reminds you of someone?  Sometimes, songs can tap into a memory or a part of you that can bring joy, bring comfort, and even at times; bring sadness.  Music has a special power in doing that.  I believe we have music to heal our hearts and bring joy to our soul.

A life with music is a life loved.

A life with love is a life that’s been lived.

A life lived is a life that’s been cherished.

Mothers’ day may be over, but I will try to carry on reflecting on those I love each day.

My Mother’s Day was absolutely perfect because:

  • I know my mom was shining down on me
  • My two children (and my adoring husband) were celebrating with me
  • I felt loved
  • I felt special
  • I felt cherished

My heart was – and always is – full.
